at least 1,000 american construction workers a year die from accidents on the job. construction robots can achieve many menial exhausting and dangerous tasks better than humans without the risk of injury or death: such as the concrete floor polisher (top left), steel frame welder (top right), concrete floor layer (bottom left) and facade de-laminator (bottom right), all by the takenaka corp.

invisible fortresses

for a country that’s always at war with an invisible enemy, what better than fortifications you don’t even notice? rogers marvel architects are proposing a series of car-bomb defenses disguised as bus stops (top) sculptural benches (bottom left) and fountains (bottom right). while the benches and fountain work just like traditional bollards and jersey barriers, the bus stop uses innovative collapsing concrete that crushes under the weight of a vehicle to prevent evildoers from approaching the building.

modular occupation

ever since my favorite architects (lotek) i have been a fan of found architecture through re-use of industrial containers. these objects are loaded with global industrial symbolism, and as it turns out, also political: this amazing site describes battleboxes, or the use of shipping containers as troop shelters by the us armed forces. their argument is that americans are alienating iraqis by living in palaces, and that if they lived in shipping containers they would appear less like permanent invaders and more like temporary liberators. (see this video). of course that hasn’t stopped israeli settlers from using containers because of their other attributes – like their bulletproofness.
